Handwriting

Handwriting

The children have been given their handwriting books so they can practise their letter formation whilst the school is closed. The focus of the handwriting sessions that they do at home should be on improving their letter formation and not improving their spelling or vocabulary. Therefore, please keep the spellings that you write in their books as short as possible.

The letter families

Your child should follow the following scheme, beginning with the curly caterpillar family of letters and only moving on to the next family of letters once they are comfortable and can form this family of letters comfortably, neatly and the correct size to other letters. This will continue to be the case for each of the families.

  1. “curly caterpillar” family of letters (c a d o s g q e f), focusing on starting position and formation pattern
  2. “long ladder” family of letters (l i t u j y), focusing on starting position and formation pattern
  3. “one-arm robot” family of letters (r b n h m k p), focusing on starting position and formation pattern
  4. “zigzag monster” family of letters (z v w x), focusing on starting position and formation pattern

An example of our writing scheme (lowercase letters only) can be found in the attached files (source: Sparklebox). Please be aware that the ‘f’ is not how we form it, however, the children know how to form this letter and I have done the curly caterpillar letters in each of their books, so if you need to see how we form them it is in your child’s book.
